Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she’s a witch and she has powers which she got from her warlock father’s side whom she has never met before. During her prom night, she felt sorry for a girl who was crying in the bathroom and so she conjured a love spell that ended in a disaster and because this wasn’t the first time that her powers were revealed to ordinary humans, she was sentenced by The Council to finish her studies in Hecate Hall a.k.a Hex Hall where all other problem Prodigiums (witches, fairies, shapeshifters, werewolves) are sent.
I didn’t like Sophie at the start, she has been to nineteen states and has to move again and again with her mom because she uses her powers carelessly, being pointed at and accused as a witch wasn’t something new to her- I really felt sorry for her mom but my impression of her changes as the story progresses, she’s adorably snarky, super funny, and she has a kind heart.
She doesn’t accept Elodie, Chaston, and Anna’s (a.k.a. The Trinity/the popular girls) invitation to join their coven even if it could boost her to popularity, she knew that these girls were nasty and would do anything for power and she isn’t like that, even when she used her powers carelessly, it was out of the goodness of her heart. She becomes close friends with the only vampire student in Hex Hall, Jenna, another funny offbeat character who’s gay and loves the color hot pink. She's also starting to like Archer, resident bad boy, heartthrob, and warlock (maybe a little too much). Archer has one flaw though - he's dating hot Elodie. (Ouch!)
I really enjoyed reading Hex Hall, the plot was surprisingly deeper than I first thought and very engrossing, Jenna was being accused of attacking Chaston and Anna and killing Holly, (Jenna's roommate before Sophie), because of the small holes found in their necks. Sophie knows that Jenna is innocent but that would mean that there are only two possibilities left as to who or what is attacking witches in Hex Hall: demons or members of L’Occhio di Dio (Eye of God - those who hunt Prodigiums). Plus there were a lot of good twists in the end that would make you reach for the next HH book!
"Sabrina the Teenage Witch" meets "The Craft"! Not your ordinary getting the boy, showing the mean girls, and realizing your strength YA book. Sophie just made me laugh so much it felt great, I would recommend it for my highschool friends a.k.a. the STTW generation!
