Stormdancer Giveaway! (Sept 20-30)

NEW RULE: You can pick Stormdancer (in paperback) or any other paperback title of your choice up to 20 USD.
Why: I'm so sorry, I should have read the book first before I decided to choose this book for my giveaway. After reading the first few chapters, I ended up not finishing the book. My second DNF (did not finish). I had a few issues with Stormdancer. I will discuss only one of them here. I'm not Japanese and yet the cultural appropriation was blatant even to me, with the author misusing a lot of Japanese terms. I knew from the cover that the world of Stormdancer was inspired by Japan, the place, its people and its culture. However, I assumed, and I think everyone else did, that the author did his research. From what I've read, he obviously didn't, and to my horror, he admits to using Wikipedia for his research.  Wikipedia articles are not accurate which is why it should never be considered as an authority on anything. Further, because you don't know who contributed the material, you don't know how reliable it is, it may false or it may contain errors. Again, I should've read the book before choosing it and I promise to do so for my next giveaway.

"Griffins are supposed to be extinct. So when Yukiko and her warrior father Masaru are sent to capture one for the Shogun, they fear that their lives are over. Everyone knows what happens to those who fail him, no matter how hopeless the task.

But the mission proves far less impossible, and far more deadly, than anyone expects – and soon Yukiko finds herself stranded: a young woman alone in her country's last wilderness, with only a furious, crippled griffin for company. But trapped together in the forest, Yukiko and Buruu soon discover a friendship that neither of them expected.

Meanwhile, the country around them verges on the brink of collapse. A toxic fuel is slowly choking the land; the omnipotent, machine-powered Lotus Guild is publicly burning those they deem Impure; and the Shogun cares about nothing but his own dominion. Yukiko has always been uneasy in the shadow of power, when she learns the awful truth of what the Shogun has done, both to her country and to her own family she's determined to do something about it.

Returning to the city, Yukiko and Buruu plan to make the Shogun pay for his crimes – but what can one girl and a flightless griffin do against the might of an empire?"

  8. I must say I really appreciate your honesty. You actually realized the book's major flaw and unashamedly said it. Kudos to that. That is blogging with integrity. Thanks for the giveaway!

    1. Thanks Chrysrawr! I shouldn't have relied on the hype about the book and just the cover blurb. :) At least it's a lesson learned. ^^

  9. Is it bad storytelling or just a bad story? Felt the same way about Memoirs of A Geisha. But I don't mind the fact-twisting...as long as it's fiction. :) Thanks for the honest review. Still intrigued about the book.
